Effective treatment of cancer should target not only the main tumor but also to tumors that may appear, by extension, elsewhere in the body (metastasis). Consequently, surgery or radiotherapy applied in specific areas of the body are often combined with chemotherapy, which covers the entire body. Even when cure is not possible, the symptoms are alleviated with palliative therapies, improving the quality of life and survival.
People treated for cancer should be followed to see how they respond to therapy. The most effective treatment is that healing occurs. Cure was defined as complete remission in which all evidence of cancer disappears (complete response). Researchers believe healing sometimes in terms of percentages of disease-free survival over a period of 5 or 10 years means that at this time the cancer goes away completely and does not recur. In a partial response, the size of one or more tumors is reduced to less than half, this response may reduce symptoms and prolong life, although the cancer growing back. Less effective treatment is one in which not produce any response.
Sometimes a cancer completely disappears but returns later, the interval between these two events is called survival time free of disease. The interval between complete response and the time of death is considered the overall survival time. In people with a partial response, its duration is measured from the time when the response occurs until the time the cancer begins to grow or expand again.
